Sally Grindley

Words have always been my thing, from the silly poems I used to write with my mum, to the 150+ children’s books I’ve had published over the years. I didn’t even take O’ Level art at school, but I’ve often heard a little voice in my head whispering ‘why don’t you have a go at drawing and painting? And, more recently, ‘why don’t you illustrate your own picture books?’ I’ve scoffed at that second question, because I’ve worked with some top illustrators and watched in awe as they’ve brought my stories magically to life. And yet…

The voice was getting louder, I had more time, so I decided to jump in with both feet. And I do mean both feet, because I landed in one of Paul Fowler’s extreme life drawing classes, even though I had never done any life drawing, let alone extreme. That first session I was so far out of my comfort zone I might just as well have been a fish in the desert! But Paul was very encouraging, I thoroughly enjoyed those first steps, and now I’m on a huge voyage of discovery to who knows where. I’m finding ways to express myself through mark-making as well as words, and I’m learning all the time. If I manage at some point to bring the two together, that will be amazing. If I don’t, it really doesn’t matter.
